Some thoughts from our Director at Casa Isla ...

“If these kids weren’t here, they would be on the streets involved in gang and drug activity,” says Bernard Scott, director of our Casa Isla Assessment and Stabilization Center.  For the majority of the residents their stay at Casa Isla marks the first time they've encountered positive role models.  “Many of their parents are incarcerated and some have died as a result of violence," says Bernard.  In contrast to the dangers of the street, Casa Isla provides a safe, secure environment where healthy relationships are formed between the residents and staff members, who serve as their mentors.  “We have kids here that are anywhere from 13 to 19 years old," says Bernard.  "What makes us different from other programs is the way we individualize the treatment for each kid.  We also have an incredible clinical and education department.”  Perhaps the strongest evidence of  the work done at Casa Isla is seen in its direct care staff, most of whom spent time in the Department of Youth Services system.  "They are true role models," says Bernard.  "They've grown up and some have families  of their own.  Now they want to be back here to help these kids.”
