On Saturday, May 5th 2012, we held our 17th
Annual I Remember Mama Luncheon at the Renaissance Hotel in Boston.
More than 200 guests were on hand to enjoy the afternoon for a good
cause.
The
luncheon featured Boston’s own Emily Rooney as keynote speaker. Ms.
Rooney, a well-known local host on WGBH, shared stories about her
family and the important women in her life. Andrew Slack, a comedian,
motivational speaker and co-founder of the Harry Potter Alliance was the
special guest speaker at the event. Perhaps one of the most
entertaining moments of the night came when Andrew was unexpectedly
asked to rap on stage causing him to begin freestyle rap, as the crowd
clapped along.
This
year, Volunteers of America Massachusetts initiated the first ever
“Susan Wornick & Myrna Billian Community Leadership Award.” The
first annual Community Leadership Award was presented to WCVB, Channel 5
news anchor Susan Wornick and her mother, Myrna Billian for all of
their years of support for Volunteers of America and the community.
Susan has been the special guest host for I Remember Mama for more than
15 years.
Other
special guests at the event included nearly 200 elderly women from the
Boston area, as Volunteers of America treated them to a special lunch
and some entertainment in the city. The women are honored by the
organization each year for Mother’s Day. Also, joining the women for
lunch was Commissioner of Elder Affairs for the city of Boston, Emily
Shea. This was the second year Commissioner Shea joined in the
festivities.
Other
guests included CEO and President of Volunteers of America
Massachusetts, Thomas Bierbaum and many donors and supporters of the
organization.
Thank you to all of our donors & volunteers! Without you this luncheon would not be possible. And a special thanks to the MBTA for providing transportation for many of guests.
