A story of persistence and hope for a better life...
Priscilla began therapy at The Family Center in Taunton about 10 years ago. At the time her life consisted of lying on the couch, drinking broth and doing little else. “I didn’t know where I was in the space of the world,” says Priscilla. In order to get through the drive to her therapy sessions, she had to lie on the floor of the car because she was overwhelmed by the activity outside. Mental health problems run in her family. Her grandfather committed suicide after killing her grandmother, and her mother was diagnosed as manic depressive. Five years into her therapy, Priscilla spiked a temperature of 104 degrees, and lapsed into a coma for four weeks. As a result, she developed memory problemswhich still affect her. Today Priscilla lives independently, has a part-time job, sleeps well, and says she couldn’t ask for anything more. She wants to live a fuller life so she’s taking a photography course and is beginning to study dinosaurs, with the hope of traveling to Utah to see a collection of Jurassic Period fossils. Due to her persistence and desire for a better life, the future is bright. With the help of her support network and The Family Center, she is putting her problems behind her and is finding her place “in the space of the world.”
